Ramatuelle is located in the Gulf of Saint Tropez and a short distance from Saint-Tropez. It is a highly sought-after location, balancing between the French Riviera’s international appeal and the languid life of Provence. Most people only go here to the lovely beach, but the core is in the medieval town. Perfectly situated on the side of a hill with typical Provencal streets that wind around the central square that also holds the weekly market: the Place de l’Ormeau.

The village has a typical Provencal atmosphere. If you are looking for peace and quiet and a ‘bon vivant’ lifestyle, you can buy a property in Ramatuelle. Time seems to stand still in the centre of the town. But Ramatuelle is of course also known for its beautiful beaches that are visited by international guests in summer.

Escalet and Pampelonne are the most famous beaches, partly due to famous seaside clubs such as Club 55 and Nikki Beach. Pampelonne became known for the Allied landings during WW2 and was also the first beach to introduce topless sunbathing on the Cote d’Azur.

Pampelonne beach is divided into five sectors (from South to North): Bonne Terrasse, Barraques, Patch, Tamaris and Moulins.

The Barraques zone is located to the south of Pampelonne beach. This zone is more family-friendly and less glamorous.

A zone is available on the Patch sector for people with reduced mobility. Also here is a first-aid post that is open in the summer.

There is a first-aid post in the Tamaris zone. Here you will also find a nudist beach. To access, take the Chemin de la Matarane. Or not.

The Moulins zone of Pampelonne beach corresponds to the most northerly part, adjacent to Tahiti beach.

For each of these sectors, you will find a parking lot (paid parking in the season) near the beach.

Ramatuelle’s fame has increased the popularity of houses; many people want to go out in a trendy beach club and then walk back home. Here you will find modern villas with a view over the Pampelonne beach, these are the most sought after houses. The hinterland, on the other hand, enjoys a spectacular natural beauty, which is loved by people looking for privacy and tranquillity. We can therefore say that the combination of a vibrant jet set and nature is a winning combination.

Haven for pirates

Many people are unaware that the village was originally founded to escape the pirates who terrorized the villages along the Mediterranean coast. Ramatuelle occupies the top of the hill and the narrow streets wind around the town in a circular pattern. Near the top of the village is Place Gabriel Peri, previously called “Castle Square” because it was the home of the Seigneurs of Audibert. The village is known as a centre for arts and crafts and there are a number of small galleries to visit.

The main historical site is the Notre Dame church, which was built against the protective walls in the 16th century. The clock tower served as a lookout. Also visit a rather intriguing prison: small and built in a distinct Arabic style. It was built by Napoleon III. Naturally, here you will find cosy restaurants for lunch or dinner in an environment covered with bougainvillaea and stone gates that were once part of the city’s defences. From the car park, you can look out over the surrounding vineyards and the southern end of Pampelonne beach and to the Cap Camarat lighthouse. This lighthouse is the second-highest in France; in clear weather, you can even see the island of Corsica at 240 km.
