Local news from the Côte d’Azur While I just turn a chicken leg on the barbeque, a Canadian flying extinguisher flies over me. “Did I made too much smoke?” is the first thought that comes up but fortunately; the shower with 6000 liters of water is not for me: they’re flying to a bigger fire, towards the mountains near Nice. I see it now: the sky there is orange black colored; luckily the wind comes from the sea towards the Alps, so we do not have to worry about it. This time. Life is getting more exciting on the French Riviera; for months we have been waiting for rain; all woods around us are dry like cork and a forestfire is just a breeze away.

The involuntary firebrigade, UFO's and a sink-hole.

You just have to be crazy to barbecue … or throw a cigarette peck in the grass. For clarity; our barbecue stands on concrete, next to the swimming pool with a water hose on the ground. We’ll hear that evening through Whatsapp that the fire at Nice even reached The Dutch tv. At midnight the wind turns and our house gets all smokey while firemen continue to fly until the fire at 04:00 is finally under control. And yesterday we had another hit; in Carros over 90 acres of land was burned plus some villas.

Every day, a red-yellow helicopter is flying in the sky above us, looking for beginning fireplaces. The municipalities require maximum caution and to have important papers and possessions ready for evacuation. And so we have become all members of the involuntary fire brigade: When we walk along the beach, we stare at the horizon, searching for smoke plumes. And yes, in La Colle sur Loup we spot big smoke clouds. Twitter tells us the fire department is on site and no aircraft is needed. That was different with the previous fire at Nice; it took 48 hours, 5 Canadairs aircrafts to fight the fire that took 120 hectares. Five firefighters on the spot had to be treated with respiratory problems. And the mistral wind keeps on blowing.

The involuntary firebrigade, UFO's and a sink-hole.

More breathing problems this weekend at Iron Man marathon, you know, the ultimate exhaustion battle that sports men in South France have been waiting all year long. Due to the strong wind, it was a rough swim over the sea to Villefranche, against the wind. I watched it from the boulevard, but a walking granny on the boulevard outpaced them all, so much wind. I can imagine you ask yourself at those moments, “What am I doing here?” There is of course no way back, you have to go through, otherwise you will never be an Iron Man. More forward thinking people but then on a road ahead, we saw the construction of tram line 2. Sturdy men of concrete looked like sheep in a sink hole; a spontaneous large hole in the road. That seems to happen sometimes and it was pragmatically solved by depositing two trucks of concrete. Crazy enough, the hole appeared again two days later, and now twice as big. And all the concrete is gone. The engineers stand for a riddle.

The involuntary firebrigade, UFO's and a sink-hole.

Another last puzzle than, even though I know the answer. This week, Jo and I saw a UFO. Do not laugh, I always believed in UFOs because it’s a bit arrogant to think that we are the only people in this universe or in any other galaxy. So there will be life somewhere else; probably smarter than man who pollutes his own planet.

It’s around 20:00 in the evening, from our terrace at 50 meters altitude in the air comes a black steel ball, from the sea. This black ball of about 30 cm cross-section fly on us, metal of structure but without noise. It was definitely no drone because you hear the engines. It was also no black hot air balloon, as it was going in a straight line. It was flying in a tight, straight line at constant speed across our house and disappeared towards the mountains. Jo and I looked at each other and started laughing: “Have we seen something strange now ?! Was that one, yes he, really ?! That was a very weird thing! Jeee, we’ve seen a UFO! ” Since then, we’re looking forward to a new “close encounter “of the mysterious black globe. For the time being, we only see firefighters.

Cycling on the Côte d’Azur has always been popular and especially by cycling groups who ‘en masse’ take over the highway for a tour with fifty friends from Vence to Menton and back. For all other people who also like cycling, biking along the seashore was until recently an exciting adventure where the road sometimes broke by a motorway or just went dead in an alley somewhere near the airport.

Luckily you can cycle now from Villeneuve Loubet on a green coloured bicycle stroll along the sea far beyond Nice. You pass Cagnes sur Mer, a very popular town with perhaps the finest and busiest boulevard of the French Riviera. Every weekend, people come from far and wide to this boulevard to make a cozy stroll and lunch in one of the many beach restaurants. Especially on Sunday, you can walk on the heads and that is unfortunate because that boulevard also is the place for the green coloured bicycle path.

To avoid you bump into sleepy grannies there is an official speed sign that prohibits cyclists to ride faster than 10 miles per hour. At specific times, there are even cops with a radar gun up to the speed control. For anyone eager to stand on the pedals, you have been warned! Leave your street racer at home, other heavy and not so fast bikes are available for hire at Velo Bleu

How to hire a Velo Bleu on the French Riviera

Cycling in southern France is delicious; you don’t feel the heat and with the ever-present sea wind it’s a perfect getaway for a sporty day at the seaside. Local residents do not dare to go cycling; the roads off the coast are too steep for an ordinary bike ride and motorists are not or hardly used to cyclists. Fortunately for tourists and lazy cyclists, you can rent a Vélo Blue (Blue Bike) and use the new green bike paths that run along the seafront promenade; everything is nice and easy to ride, for young and old. The only thing you need is a bike; you can rent the Vélo Blue bikes for a day or even for a year (useful if you are a slow cyclist and want to bike from Nice to Marseille and back).

This is how you rent a Vélo Blue bike

There are 175 Vélo Blue stations around Nice and Cagnes sur Mer; here you can say ‘Swipe and Bike’ in good French. Simply swipe your credit card through the terminal and rent a Vélo Bleu bike for a day or a week. This can only be done at the Vélo Blue stations at Place Massena, Blvd Dubouchage, Nice-Ville and Riquier train stations, Saint-Laurent du Var, Promenade des Anglais (Gambetta), the promenade at Cagnes-sur-Mer, Blvd Jean Jaures, Quai des Etats Unis and the Promenade des Anglais (west side).

If you do not want to ride a bicycle with a credit card in your pocket, you can register in advance using the internet with your bank account and receive your own Vélo Blue card by mail.

Online bike hire Côte d’Azur

Go to www.velobleu.org and choose “Je m’inscris”.

There are two choices:

1 month or 1 year: Pay by internet. Alternatively, you can call 0430 00 30 01 by telephone, with your credit card at the Vélo Bleu station.

1 day or 1 month – via internet. Alternatively, you can call  0430 00 30 01 by telephone, with your credit card at the Vélo Bleu station.

If you register via the website, you will receive the Vélo Bleu card by postal mail. Using this service, your bike tour will be safely and quickly arranged.

How does the Vélo Blue terminal work?

This is the official French instruction for a Vélo Bleu.

Turn it on by the blue button in the top right corner. This may take several minutes.

Keep the Vélo Bleu card for the blue circle under the number zero on the keypad. More English-language instructions can be found here

Choose “Louer” to rent a bicycle. If there is more than one bike at the terminal, the machine will ask which bike you want to take.

Press number 1, 2, or 3 and then okay. Just pull the cable out of the lock and bicycle.

If you bring a bike back, choose “Restituer”.

The machine will ask you to insert a lock cable in 1, 2 or 3. Then wait for the confirmation on the screen: “Merci d’utiliser Vélo Bleu”.

What does it cost to rent a Vélo Bleu?

25 € / year (with Ligne d’Azur card only € 15)
10 € / month
5 € / week
1 € / day
Between 30-60 minutes € 1 and then 2 € for each additional hour

The first 30 minutes are free so you can (in principle) stop every 28 minutes, return the bike quickly at a Velo Blue station, rent a bike again and return it within 30 minutes. Keep in mind the fact that some terminals are broken and the next delivery point is at least 10 minutes cycling again. But if you’re on a budget, this works.

Problems?

-Sometimes terminals do not work best; look for another in doubt.

-If the bike can not be locked or unlocked, slowly turn the cable into the lock and try again. If it does not work, go to another terminal.

-If you want to return your bike and the lock does not work or if you can not unlock, call the Vélo Bleu number 04 93 72 06 06 and the number of the bike (on the side of the bike) the name of the location ( Bourne) and the time of day. Customer service is open from Mon-Sat from 7h-20h on 04 93 72 06 06. If it is later or on Sunday, leave a message.

-Control the tires and seat adjustment before choosing a bike.

-If there is only 1 bike in a row of terminals, there is probably something wrong with that terminal. Do not rent a bike here.

Have fun!

Dining is part of the French Riviera lifestyle. Mediterranean cuisine is famous, healthy and loved by young and old. That is not without a reason; the quality of French restaurants is perfect, according to tourists and to be honest; you actually can eat a decent meal everywhere. But if ‘decent’ is not enough and you are searching for that one-hearted address you would like to bring your friends to, you’ll drive a little further than the known routes.

And we have lots of special restaurants on the Côte d’Azur, where the menu is mouthwatering, the amuse a piece of art, the wine tastes surprisingly tasty and dishes are in perfect balance than the standard entrecote or baked dorade. For those who are open to new addresses and love top class Italian cuisine, we have a great dining tip; Farinelli in Nice. Reading tip! An article about Best reasons to buy a property on the French Riviera.

Dining tip: Restaurant Farinelli in Nice

The location of this stylish restaurant has a rich history; a long time ago here was the best running restaurant in Nice, but by decay the address became oblivious. Last year, some Italians dared to renovate and to invest and opened a beautiful Italian quality restaurant. With a name that will be recognized by opera lovers as it was named after the famous opera singer Farinelli.

As proud as only Italians can be proud, Farinelli is proud of Farinelli. And on the menu. And on the wines. And on the chef who earned his stars in top restaurants in Milan and St Petersburg. And we agree with the enthusiasm, the team deserves your applause as the food is really great here. Whether for a business lunch or a family dinner, every occasion fits with Farinelli.

Dining tip: Restaurant Farinelli in Nice.

Dining tip: Restaurant Farinelli in Nice.

For the average holidaymaker, this quality restaurant is not on the lazy strolling routes where fast-paced tourist restaurants row in line try to drag you inside. For the Farinelli experience, you will walk to your table in ten minutes from the port, after which the party of Italian delights can begin.

For readers and clients and friends of Living on the Cote d’Azur, we have a nice agreement with owner Elio d’Agostino. If you say you come via us and send greetings from ‘Alberto et Jolanda’, you will receive a delicious glass of Prosecco. Enjoy your stay at Farinelli in Nice!

Cannes, the city full of glamor, red carpet, champagne and fast sports cars also has a quiet side. Just walk past the harbor and turn right on the sea road, towards Mandelieu and Theoule. Here you will find the Croix de Garde and La Bocca neighborhoods. The beach restaurants here are a bit more relaxed and do not show off with the most expensive champagne at the entrance.

A wonderful beach day is here available to everyone; lots of public beach for free, so bring your sunglasses and hat, some slippers and sunscreen. And fortunately, from June 15, you will not have to walk endlessly on your tongs through Cannes to come here; Just step in the free shuttle bus to the Boccacabana beaches.

The new beaches of Cannes Boccabana!

The minibus operates according to the principle as in the Southern French ski areas; it’s a free and non stop service that runs in a loop of almost 6 kilometers. This new shuttle bus in Cannes has 18 stops, including Rue de la Verrerie, Boulevard du Midi, Grand Place, Avenue Francis Tonner and Rubin. The shuttle runs from 07:00 until 19:15 and operates from 15 June to 15 September.

The new beaches of Cannes Boccabana!

The municipality of Cannes is rebuilding the beautiful and unknown piece of beach and seawall at Cannes Midi and Cannes la Bocca, which will eventually create a beautiful sandstrip called Boccabana, to the almost identical sand strip Coppa Cabana in Rio de Janeiro. The narrow alley where joggers, hikers and dogs regularly collide will be turned into a larger space with special areas for joggers and strollers, a cycling track and a special shuttle bus connection with the heart of Cannes. The artist impression looks beautiful; we can enjoy already this summer a first part. The work will continue during autumn and winter. After the summer, the free Boccacabana bus line is included in the Palm Express line.

Hanging out in the South of France with sunny weather, a nice swimming pool or the beach and sea at your feet, friends around you and a nice cold drink. Yes, French Riviera summer times are here again. The only thing missing in the above is some cool music!

Interview with French Riviera #1 DJ Andrew Carter

With thousands of radiostations on the Internet and platforms like I-Tunes, Spotify and Soundcloud you can choose from lots of music styles and radiostations. On beaches, in restaurants and in clubs, DJ’s are one of the most powerful ingredients for a great evening or night out. Today, everyone can be a DJ, but some really stand out in the crowd. Like French Riviera resident DJ Andrew Carter.

Interview with French Riviera #1 DJ Andrew Carter

With over a million (!) downloads on Soundcloud, this guy sure knows how to entertain! We play since a few years Andrew Carter Pool House mixes in the car and at the pool. Tunes you remember and new entries all mingle together in a never boring mix-hour of great music. Before he will become as famous as DJ Tiësto or David Guetta, Living on the Côte d’Azur asked him a few questions.

Interview with French Riviera #1 DJ Andrew Carter

Are you born and raised on the Côte d’Azur?

Yes, I was born in Grasse, so i’ve spent my life on the French Riviera. I’m 28 and British… although that might change with brexit lol.

Was being a ‘popular DJ’ on your wish list as a young boy?

I guess i started messing around with cd’s and stuff around 13 years old, and started working as a DJ at 19.

What equipment do you use?

Serato with Pioneer DDJ SX, it’s great to get around with and has everything you need for big events.

How long do you think about a mix can be actually made. And how long does that take?

It kind of depends, sometimes things stick together pretty fast, and other times it’s harder to get it to sound good.

It takes probably half a day to organise and mix a compilation, but days of work before that finding original tracks.

You are one of the most famous local resident DJ’s on the Riviera. Who inspired you to become a DJ?

I don’t particularly idolise anyone, I just love quality music from all periods, from Bill Withers to Jamiroquai right through to underground House music. Defected Records has to be one of my favorite record labels.

How did you feel when the first downloads went over 1.000?

Curious.

How do you feel now you’ve reached 1 million plays?

It’s pretty cool, Soundcloud has been a big help for me, many places play my mixes around France and the world which kind of gives me free publicity.

You use Daniela Andrade music a lot. Did you meet her?

Never, but she’s got a pretty nice voice right?

Who designs the artwork; it looks great.

That would be me with a little help from photoshop.

What can we expect from you in 2017?

I don’t actually have a fixed agenda, but I’ll be around between MonteCarlo and St Tropez.

Is there a gig agenda, or a website to follow you.

The best would be to add me on Facebook, which I regularly update.

Follow his event agenda

“Aaah, one more round. I want to watch it again. “Jo is happy. She chortles aloud and it sounds almost not appropriate in The luxury CAP 3000 where people usually make shopping a serious business. But we happen to be at the brand new Hema store, located on the first floor of the new wing of the CAP 3000.

“Oh, how wonderful all! Look, licorice, peanut butter and yummie, mergpijpjes!” (sort of Dutch battenberg cake). It is obvious that the new Hema on the French Riviera is going to be a fixed physical address for our weekly grocery shopping. Hema, once my first job when I was fifteen at the branch Kinkerstraat Amsterdam. I still know some department numbers for the cash out: 14 for office and stationery and 17 for wine. That these two segments still play a role in my life, does prove that your fate is predestined.

This week’s official opening was quickly buzzed through the social network. Even ten-year-old girlfriends of our daughter Fé warned her that the ‘EMA’ would open in the CAP. Behind the Apple store, finding it in the back of the hall with great expectation: there it is: Hema, next to the new Armani shop. At the entrance are some red and white balloons and that’s a a little disappointing. A stall with vanilla slices and hot smoked Hema sausage would be much more like the real Hema, but well, that might be too shocking for most French that shuffle a little uneasy through the store.

Fortunately this Hema on the French Riviera has everything that makes Hema so fun. From funky notebooks with lines, funny kitchen stuff, nice glasses and tea towels that dry immediately to treats such as candies, battenbergs and of course waffles. And so another argument is taken why we sometimes must go back to the Netherlands. Actually, you can find everything Dutch in France; either online or in a real cozy shop. There remains only one wish for this Amsterdammer; a fresh raw herring, preferably with onions and acid. Who knows where you can buy fresh herring, I’ll happy to buy you one too.

Fireworks in Cannes never bore. Just before the start, there is a healthy tension; you know something special is going to happen and slowly the clock ticks away the minutes. Perhaps you are with a panini in your hand on the Croisette or seated at one of the chic table settings at a five star hotel to enjoy a lavish dinner. Locals have taken for sure home-made paella or roasted chicken and some wine of with them, waiting on the public beach at the spectacle that is to come.

At exactly 22:00 pm, all the lights on the boulevard fall out; a magical moment where I always wonder where that button actually is . Then a French lady cracks through the speakers and called us all: “Bienvenue to the Festival d’Art Pyrotechnique in Cannes!”

The program for the Cannes International Fireworks Festival looks promising:

14 July: Pyrotechnics SIRIUS Canada

July 21: ALPHA Pyro France

29 July: SMART Pyrotecnics England

August 07: PYROVISION Austria

15 August: DRAGON Fireworks Philippines

August 24: PANZERA Italy

Fireworks is becoming more graceful and beautiful to look at; hearts dancing to the beat of the music and thunder sounds  popping like a Leopard tank, it is truly a spectacle. You can shout ‘oooh’ and clap your hands, but you’re also invited to vote for best performance. More information can be found at

www.festival-pyrotechnique-cannes.com

Since 1967

Cannes is the best known and the origin of the Cannes International Fireworks Festival that dates back to 1967, when local fireworks maker Ruggieri and the city of Cannes decided to launch an international competition for the best fireworks makers in the world.

Off the coast some potons are at anchor and a few days before this magical evening this is all well guarded. Computers have taken over the timing of previously blackened employees; every rocket fired is perfectly timed to the rhythm of the music. More than 150,000 people come yearly to the southern French coast to look under the starry sky of the bay of Cannes for this colorful festival that should last at least 25 minutes. In between the Lérins islands and the Esterel mountains is the open air stage as much as 400 meters wide and 200 meters high, so you will not miss anything.

Fireworks Festival 2017 Cannes, Monaco, Antibes Juan les Pins

Fireworks Festival Monaco 2017

Credit where credit is due; the first ‘fireworks in music performance’ at the French Riviera was held in Monaco. Since 1966, Monte Carlo organizes its own International Fireworks Festival with obviously a high-powered sound system. This will flutter your hair along with the music and the bass sound comes back from the buildings as if Formula 1  never left the area. These high quality performances can be seen from the Port Hercule, the Avenue d’Ostende or on Quai Albert Ier.

Each show lasts 20 minutes and begins at midnight. Nice for the neighbors!
