What to see and what to buy in Eze

The village of Eze, located near Nice, is one of the most beautiful places in the South of France. It is located on a rock and has a beautiful unobstructed view of the sea and the mountains. Walk with your mouth open through the narrow streets of the village and imagine yourself back in time.

Eze can be found on a 425 meter high cliff and is also called the “Eagle’s Nest“. It has been inhabited for over 2000 years and the Romans took over the area. Greek coins were also discovered in the area during this period. When you look at the location of the village, it is easy to see why it is one of the most beautiful places in France.

Visit Eze, French Riviera

The old and steep streets of the village are an attraction in themselves. Walking through the village will take you back in time as you see the different paths and vegetation that surrounds it. Its most recognizable landmark is Notre Dame de L’Assomption, with a distinctive blue clock in its spire. This neoclassical church was built in the 18th century and is considered a national monument.

Also popular with locals is the Jardin Exotique d’Eze. A beautiful botanical garden to visit once a week. This garden is located in Eze and has a fantastic view over the mountains and the sea. Ludwig Nietzsche often walked through the Eze area during his stay in the area. His walking on this path inspired the third volume of his book “Also Sprach Zarathustra”. The road, now called the Nietzsche path, is about 2.1 kilometers long and takes about an hour.

Eze is photogenic; every time you turn the corner you have another beautiful view. And be sure to visit one of the former stables and sheepfolds that now house the studios of artists and craftsmen. Here the rich local heritage is revealed.

You can go there for a free tour where an enthusiastic guide tells you more about the history of the factory and how their perfume is made. After your tour you can also buy some of these wonderful scents. From 15 euros you already have a fragrance that is worth its money. Very nice to take home as a souvenir!

Château Eza

Within the old city walls of 9th century Eze, Chateau Eza was built 400 years ago. It is no coincidence that the castle has been given this name. During a boat trip, most likely with his father, William first visited the village. A few years later he left his court and bought the ensemble of cottages and christened it Chateau Eza. Until 1976 it was known as “The Prince of Sweden’s Castle”.

Today, the Château Eza is part of the luxury hotel on the French Riviera. The hotel, with a unique decoration in the style of Louis XIII, offers rooms with a view of the Mediterranean Sea and has a gastronomic restaurant where you can enjoy a delicious dinner after your visit to the city!
