Situated high on a rock, Gassin is a commune located in the Var department of southern France. It’s located in the center of the St. Tropez Peninsula, about 4 kilometers from the sea and the port city of St. Tropez. Gassin is regarded as one of the most beautiful villages in France. It offers a panoramic view of the Iles d’Or and the surrounding hills.
The summit of Gassin, which has a rocky and panoramic view, can be reached from a distance of 200 meters. It can also be seen from the coastline of Grimaud, La Croix Valmer and Les Issambre, as well as the peaks of the Alps and the Maures mountains. Gassin houses 3,000 people, most of which live in ancient houses and winding streets. During the summer season, the area is known for its Cte d’Azur lifestyle.
What to see and what to buy in Gassin
Upon reaching Gassin, you will be able to start your visit by making your way to the orientation table, which is located near the parking area’s highest point. This area offers a magnificent view of Gassin and the Bay of Saint Tropez as well as the surrounding hills. You can also see the coastlines of Grimaud, Les Issambres, La Croix Valmer, St. Tropez, and Sainte-Maxime.
You can take a walk along the medieval terrace known as the Promenade de la Barri. There, you will come across various restaurants that serve up great food and have their own outdoor dining areas with panoramic views. This is an ideal spot to stop for lunch.
Even though Gassin’s historic village is small, you’ll be surprised by how much it has to offer. Strolling through its ancient streets is a delightful way to explore this area. One of the most interesting streets in the town is called l’Androuno, which is reportedly the narrowest street of the world. The aroma of Jasmine lingers in the air as you walk through the streets.
You can also take a walk around the L’Hardy-Denonain garden, which is located south of Gassin and showcases some of the plants that are commonly associated with the area. This garden is regarded as a remarkable garden in France.
One of the most notable historic buildings in the village is the Notre Dame-de-l’Assomption. This 16th-century church features a square belltower.
One of the village’s religious monuments is the Notre Dame-de-la-Consolation, which is an 11th-century chapel that can be found in a park below the main village.
During the 19th century, several cork makers worked in the village. During this period, silk worms were also raised in the area before they were sent to Cogolin, a nearby village that is known for its arts and crafts. The other main trade that the village’s residents had was charcoal making.
Gassin, which is located below the medieval village, has been recognized as the best new town in Europe. It was designed by Francois Spoerry, who was also responsible for the design of Port Grimaud. Although it is a well-designed village, it doesn’t follow the same style as the medieval one.
The villages of Gassin, as well as Ramatuelle, were established to allow their residents to escape the pirate activities that were taking place in the Mediterranean Sea. These communities are typically visited during the same tour in the region.
Gassin is located close to several beaches, such as Pampelonne. Some of the areas that are popular with tourists are also protected by an organization that is dedicated to preserving the natural environment of the region.
